State Street and UC Investments have launched a new initiative to give individuals access to sophisticated wealth management tools traditionally reserved for large institutions and ultra-high-net-worth clients.
The strategic alliance between the global financial services firm and the University of California’s investment arm offers a “superapp” to participants in UC’s defined contribution plan. This AI-powered digital platform provides personalised financial planning, access to private market opportunities, and enhanced financial literacy tools.
Initially serving more than 353,000 members of UC’s retirement savings plan, the platform may eventually extend to the university’s wider network — including nearly 300,000 students and over two million alumni.
Ron O’Hanley, chairman and chief executive officer at State Street, says: “This alliance strengthens our enduring relationship with UC Investments. It reflects our mutual commitment to harnessing technology and innovation to enhance financial outcomes for individual investors and their families.”
The initiative builds on a longstanding partnership between the two organisations. State Street manages US$110 billion of UC’s US$193 billion portfolio and provides custody and investment services across most of its assets. The two firms previously collaborated on projects including the 2017 launch of an optional annuity solution and, more recently, the 2024 opening of UC’s Blue & Gold Endowment Pool to individual retirement savers.
Jagdeep Singh Bachher, chief investment officer for the University of California, says: “We are proud to expand our partnership with State Street to deliver the kinds of insights, tools, and investment access that have historically been reserved for large institutions or ultra-wealthy investors. Our goal is to help every UC community member take control of their financial future — using AI, data, and design to build a long-term plan for wealth and security.”
