UMB Bank has reported annual growth across its Institutional Custody business.

As of 31 March 2026, the company held US$250 billion in assets under custody, representing a 19 per cent year-on-year increase from the same period in 2025.

The figure also marks a 298 per cent rise since custody became a standalone business at UMB in 2019.

The Institutional Custody division, led by Amy Small, executive vice president and executive director of Institutional Custody, serves fund managers, municipalities, insurance providers and other institutional clients.

UMB says growth has been driven by increased demand from municipal government and insurance clients, rising interest in private and semi-liquid funds, and a greater need for liquidity solutions among asset managers.

The bank says many municipal governments and asset managers are now managing more complex investment portfolios, increasing demand for middle office services including risk monitoring, collateral management, and treasury and liquidity support.

Small says: “In addition to size, increased complexity is driving the need for specialised services for government and other political subdivisions.

“We’ve seen a similar evolution of business needs among insurance companies, where middle office services often focus on non-traditional asset servicing for alternative investments, foreign exchange capabilities, regulatory reporting, securities lending, and collateral management.”

The city of Fort Worth recently selected UMB to provide custodial services for its multi-billion-dollar operations, expanding UMB’s presence in Texas across commercial banking, private wealth management, and retail banking.

Alex Laufer, assistant director of finance and city treasurer at the city of Fort Worth, comments: “The city of Fort Worth manages a large and increasingly complex investment portfolio, and having a strong custodial partner is essential to maintaining effective oversight, liquidity, and operational efficiency.

“UMB’s capabilities will help strengthen our operational infrastructure, enhance risk management, and support the city’s long-term financial stewardship as our needs continue to evolve.”
