Standard Chartered has launched its Hong Kong tokenised deposits solution, utilising the infrastructure behind the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s (HKMA) Project EnsembleTX, an initiative for real-value tokenised transactions in a controlled environment.
The launch aims to help corporate treasurers, banks, investment platforms, and digital asset businesses increase the efficiency of their treasury, liquidity, and operational activities.
The offering is built on Standard Chartered's blockchain infrastructure, with support from the HKMA’s Supervisory Incubator for Distributed Ledger Technology, enabling eligible clients to use commercial bank deposits within digital treasury and investment workflows — including intragroup liquidity management.
Clients will also be able to transfer tokenised deposits in real time across participants and settle between banks in central bank money on a 24/7 basis.
As part of the initiative, Standard Chartered is partnering with Fireblocks to provide access to the digital asset client ecosystem and with HashKey to expand the solution’s reach.
Commenting on the launch, Standard Chartered’s CEO for Hong Kong, Greater China, and North Asia, Mary Huen, says: “Standard Chartered has been a major participant in the HKMA’s EnsembleTX, contributing to its development and some of its earliest real-value transaction use cases.
“This has given us first-hand experience of how tokenisation can enhance efficiency, transparency and interoperability across financial markets.”
Ole Matthiessen, global head of transaction services and digital assets at Standard Chartered, adds: “This launch brings digital money into practical treasury and investment workflows, supported by the trust and controls of the banking system.
“By working across the ecosystem, we are addressing real client needs and playing our part in taking tokenisation from experimentation towards broader scalable adoption.”
Standard Chartered plans to expand the solution to additional markets in due course.
